When was Fort Bragg incorporated?
The city was founded in 1989. The union lumber company incorporated in 1991 becoming a dominant powerhouse in the lumber industry in the late 1800’s. The rail was opened in 1912 bringing
Is Fort Bragg a military post?
Originally Fort Bragg served as a military garrison from the years 1857 – 1864. It was opened for settlement beginning in 1866 and later became an incorporated city. Fort Bragg has not been a military post since its was evacuated and abandoned in 1864.
Why is the city named Fort Bragg?
Fort Bragg originally gained its name in 1857 by 1st Lt. Horatio Gibson. Naming Fort Bragg after his former commanding officer Braxton Bragg. A Mexican American war veteran Bragg later became a general for the confederate army during the civil war.
In 2016 the city council was approached by a California organization requesting they change the name of the city due to its origins sharing a distant connection with the confederate army. The city council voted down the order to rename the city.
